Barry Young River of Stories

Short Stories Competition

Conditions of entry:

  • This is a competition for Primary and Secondary school students only.
  • Entrants must reside within a 150 km radius of AlburyWodonga.
  • Entry is free.
  • All entries must be unpublished, original works composed entirely by the entrant.
  • All entries must relate to the theme ‘Friends’, in some way.
  • Years 3-6 word limit: 500 words, Years 7-8 word limit: 1000 words, Years 9-12 word limit: 1,500 words. Entries must not exceed the word limit by more than 10%.
  • A separate entry form must be completed for each submission.
  • Names should NOT be written on the story. The name of the entrant should appear on the entry form only.
  • Entries must be submitted by 11:59pm on Friday 24 July 2026. Late entries will not be accepted.
  • Only online submissions will be accepted. If you are unable to submit your entry online, please contact  LearningOutreach@alburycity.nsw.gov.au or (02) 6023 8371 to discuss alternative arrangements.
  • Finalists will be invited via email to the Awards Ceremony, which will be held during the Write Around the Murray Festival on Saturday 12 September 2026 at 11.30am at the Albury LibraryMuseum.
  • The judges reserve the right to reject works that do not comply with the conditions outlined above. The judges' decision is final.
  • The winning short story in each category will be published on the Write Around the Murray website.
  • All entries must be completed by an individual. Group entries are not allowed.
