Kate Smith and Lachlan Brown

Kate Smith is a painter who has participated in several important surveys of contemporary art in Australia within institutions such as the National Gallery of Victoria, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Heide Museum of Modern Art and Murray Art Museum Albury. She has been the recipient of awarded residencies within institutions including Artspace, Gertrude Contemporay and Canberra Contemporary.

Kate’s paintings lay bare the conventions of the medium and attend to its limitations. Wry, witty yet critically perceptive, her works are active sites of negotiation in which opposing elements defiantly co-exist. Confident brushstrokes collide with hesitant gestures to fluidly recall references from popular culture, art history and personal anecdotes, each with latent resonance in both artwork and title.

Examples of her Kate’s work are included in significant public and private collections across Australia.

Lachlan Brown is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing and English at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga. He is the author of two books of poetry published by Giramondo, Limited Cities (2017) and Lunar Inheritance (2017). Lachlan’s poems have been shortlisted and commended for various poetry prizes including the Blake Poetry Prize, the Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize, the Peter Porter Poetry Prize and the University of Canberra Vice Chancellor’s International Poetry Prize. His poem “Any Saturday, 2021, Running Westward” won the Newcastle Poetry Prize. Lachlan’s poems have appeared in The Australian, Antipodes, Rabbit, Australian Poetry Journal and Cordite. Lachlan’s poetic commissions include "Flow State" for the Powerhouse Museum and "Vox-Proximate" for ABC Everyday. He has chaired the judging panel for the Kenneth Slessor Prize for poetry in the NSW Premier’s Literary awards and has experience judging many other poetry and literary prizes.
