Yackandandah writer, Louise D’Arcy has taken out the 2009 AlburyCity Short Story competition first prize of $500 from a field of national entrants.
Judge of the open section of the competition and acclaimed publisher, Helen Chamberlin, said Ms D’Arcy’s story, Happy Birthday, was a beautifully constructed, subtle but devastating depiction of a horrific childhood.
Last year’s winner, Kate Rotherham from Allans Flat was highly commended for her story Go Well! along with Albury author, Dorothy Simmons for Fair Go and Lavington’s Terry Dulhunty was commended for his story, Daisy.
Ms Chamberlin said the standard of the stories was pleasingly high, with good strong writing and with more than average rural subjects which was to be expected in a regional competition.

Winner: The Fractured Beauty Rachel Knight, Albury
