Write around the Murray festival

From page to performance

Sunday 27 July to Sunday 3 August 2008

Eight days, 20 writers at community presentations, schools and workshops with students, writing workshops with the general public, the creation of new works and the launch of two books.

More than a thousand people were part of the 2008 Write around the Murray festival, and the feedback on the program has been fantastic.

Visiting writers including David Stratton, Paula Constant, Felice Arena, Rochelle Jackson, Hannie Rayson, Michael Pryor, Simon Higgins, Richard Evans, Libby Gleeson, Nathan Curnow, Mark Olive and Jacqueline Pascarl commented on the friendliness of the region and responsiveness of their audiences and workshop participants.

Michael Pryor at Billabong High School

Add to this the input of regional talent through writers including John Charalambous, Cate Kennedy, Jane Downing, Campion Decent, and Paul Gibbs, with specialist workshops by Carole McCulloch on digital storytelling and the Wodonga Family History group on writing a family history.

And what turned out to be one of the most popular events – the literary pub crawl. A chance to visit some places of interest in Albury’s CBD and hear new works created especially for the crawl.

There were some new writers acknowledged through the short story and Energised competitions.

Kate Rotheram from Allan’s Flat has taken out the major prize of $1,000 in the AlburyCity Short Story Competition – “A reason to celebrate” with her first ever short story, “Bullies and Fountains” .  Peter Papathanasiou from Canberra took out the two highly commended prizes with his stories “Just Another Sorry” and “Shadow Boxing”, while Jacqueline Winn from Armidale in New South Wales was commended for her story, “Delia’s Time”.

Winners

In the Children’s section, judged by children’s author, Gordon Reece, Albury’s Johanna Bartel won first prize, with her story, “Olivia’s Reason to Celebrate”; Dylan Harris was commended for his story,  and Yarrawonga’s Jemima Bye was also commended for her story, “A Dream or Not”.

The festival was also well supported by the community based festival committee and other organisations including Hothouse Theatre and Charles Sturt University.

Sponsors included State Libraries, Festivals Australia, the Country Arts Support Program through Regional Arts NSW funding, Dymocks, Collins Booksellers, Qantaslink, 2AY and Booranga Writers, with sponsorship of the children's section of the short story competition by the Friends of the LibraryMuseum.  Read the winning entries in the short story and Energised competitions here (create link to docs – short stories and Energised)

If you couldn’t get to this year’s festival, then look forward to 2009 when the festival will return.
